Resveratrol Fights Cellular Aging and More
Is resveratrol—a compound found in red wine—the new anti aging wonder drug of the future without it being a drug? Interestingly, this natural substance has been referenced in over 2,000 research publications because of its ability to promote longevity at the cellular level.
Researchers have documented its positive effects for diseases of aging, including arthritis joint health, brain health, immune function, cellular energy, heart health and cardiovascular function, to name a few.
One of the most exciting areas in anti aging research has been the study of the genetic regulators of aging. Recently, in laboratory studies, scientists identified resveratrol's impact on the four key mechanisms of cellular aging, as follows:
What is resveratrol?
Resveratrol, an antioxidant, is produced by plants as an antifungal chemical. Plants produce it to defend themselves against bacteria and fungi caused by the environmental stress and the severity of weather conditions. The substance is found in widely varying amounts in the skin of red grapes, in peanuts, berries of Vaccinum species, including blueberries, bilberries, and cranberries, some pines, such as Scots pine and eastern white pine, and the roots and stalks of giant knotweed and Japanese knotweed, called hu zhang in China.
First isolated in 1940 as a constituent of the roots of white hellebore, it is a constituent of red wine, but apparently not in sufficient amounts to explain the French paradox that the incidence of coronary heart disease is relatively low in southern France despite high dietary intake of saturated fats.
A number of beneficial health effects, such as anti-cancer, antiviral, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and life-prolonging effects have been reported.
The substance made headlines in November 2006 when scientists demonstrated that it kept overfed mice from gaining weight, turned them into the equivalent of Olympic marathoners, and seemed to slow down their aging process.
Resveratrol and plant polyphenols slow down aging
The mechanisms of resveratrol's apparent effects on life extension are not fully understood, but they appear to mimic several of the biochemical effects of calorie restriction.
Research published by the journal Nature in November, 2006 indicated that it had life-extending activity in the genes involved in an organism’s ability to withstand extreme environments, such as calorie restriction (scarcity of food), lack of water, or excessive heat. These genes have the power to keep the organism’s natural defense and repair activities going strong regardless of age.
By optimizing the body’s functioning for survival, this family of genes maximizes the individual’s chances of getting through the crisis. And if they remain activated long enough, they can also dramatically enhance the organism’s health and extend its life span. In essence this family of genes represent the opposite of aging genes—longevity genes.
The activation key to increasing life expectancy was found from the natural plant world in a group of molecules containing this compound from grapeskins and polyphenols from plants. It has been proven in anti aging research to slow down aging and to enhance the health you already have.
Other relevant research confirms its potential lifestyle benefits.
Research is extensive
The research on resveratrol is voluminous, consisting of well over 2,000 publications. It became the leading compound known to activate a longevity gene, but its potential is far reaching for universal health conditions.
It has been tested for its ability to stop pain, stop the growth of the bacteria (helicobacter-pylori) that causes stomach ulcers that can lead to cancer, protect immune cells, protect DNA, protect against skin cancer, improve joint disease and many other conditions.
It’s important to note that much of the anti aging discoveries on this grape-skin substance has involved laboratory test tubes or rodents and many questions remain unanswered concerning its total potential for humans.
Nonetheless, the sheer volume and scope of the research suggests that it's one of the most versatile and effective plant compounds discovered so far. It represents a fresh solution to many common diseases of human aging.
Are there any side effects or interactions?
No side effects or well-known drug interactions have been reported with the use of resveratrol.
Most importantly, the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and other organizations explain that the compound is not known to be toxic or cause adverse effects in humans.
Most prominently, safety data from animal studies were published in Toxicoll Science in 2004 and in the Journal of Nutrition in 2002.
Furthermore, a recent trial that evaluated the safety of oral resveratrol in ten subjects found a single dose from 0.5 to 5 grams resulted in no serious adverse effects. The study was published in 2007 in Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers.
Resveratrol is available in nutritional supplements but beware their quality
This compound is primarily available as a resveratrol dietary supplement.
A supplement that is well designed consisting of plant extracts can be highly beneficial. People notice increased energy levels, better looking skin, a reduction of aches and pains and a sense of well-being. They may also be extending their lifespan and reducing their risk of life-threatening illnesses.
When a supplement is poorly designed, people see little, if any benefit. Look for the highest quality. Find a manufacturer's video that fully explains how the product works and why. If you buy low quality resveratrol supplements, you're just throwing away your money.
Unfortunately, most dietary supplements are not well-designed yet are legally sold in the United States as they are considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as foods, not as drugs, which are stringently regulated.

While there are many resveratrol products on the market, there is no anti aging supplement that comes close to comparing with its purity, potency, safety and anti aging benefits. Consider the following facts:
