An advanced vegetarian glucosamine joint supplement bound with an extract from the boswellia tree outperformed the nation's leading brand by recording 45% better relief in joint pain, 31% improvement in joint stiffness all in 28% faster time, according to a 2011 clinical study.
Researchers measured and compared the effectiveness of several national brands of glucosamine-based supplements that contained additional blended components. Study participants noted improved motion and less joint pain if the glucosamine product included boswellia extract with high levels of acetyl-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA). Two supplements in the study contained AKBA. Only one was composed of a synergistic blend of AKBA as well as other natural constituents of the boswellia resin.
After 90 days of use, subjects who took the extract made with the synergistic blend of active components experienced better results than those who took the boswellia extract with just a high level of AKBA.
Study participants were asked to rate their level of comfort and ease of motion before and after taking a joint supplement.
Results showed that the synergistic blend of boswellia extract in the best joint supplement of those studied, Advanced Joint Health Complex, scored significantly better in both categories than the boswellia extract in the leading national brand--45% better joint comfort, and 31% better ease of motion than Osteo-Bi-Flex®. The study was published in the <i>International Journal Medical Sciences.(1)
In the clinical study, the boswellia extract in Advanced Joint Health Complex worked in as few as five days, up to 28% faster than claimed by Osto Bi-Flex®, Nature Made® Triple Flex, and Schiff® Move Free®. (1) This short video provides details.
Advanced Joint Health Complex is manufactured and marketed by the Shaklee Corporation, founded in 1956. They are the #1 natural nutrition company in the U.S. It contains 1500 mg of corn-sourced glucosamine hyrdrochloride, and 100 mg of a patent-pending fast-acting form of boswellia serrata herb extract resin in a complex also including vitamin C, zinc, copper and manganese.
Boswellia, or Indian Frankincense, is the gum resin from the tree boswellia serrata. It has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to support joints and soft tissues. Boswellia extract is one of those ingredients that works fast to improve joint comfort. Its key active components are boswellic acids. They have anti-inflammatory activity and in laboratory studies have been shown to inhibit the activity of leukotrienes, bio-chemicals produced in the body that attack joint tissue and contribute to joint discomfort.
“Not all boswellic extracts are created equal,” said Jamie McManus, M.D., Chairman of Medical Affairs, Health Sciences and Education at Shaklee Corporation. “Extracts that contain a high concentration of the boswellic extract AKBA as well as other natural constituents of the resin appear to work better than extracts that just have AKBA alone. A fast-acting boswellia extract is a great choice for those looking for a natural approach for relieving joint pain and stiffness.”(2)
The Shaklee Corporation has long-dominated the nutritional supplement industry with its scientific approach to natural product development. Known for top tier quality, Shaklee scientists endeavor to create the best product of its kind in the market. The science behind each of their products is second to none. They've invested more than $250 million in clinical testing, research and development and have over 90 published studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals, more than any other nutritional company!
Glucosamine is an amino sugar and key building block for the larger protepoglycans in the joint. These are the large molecules that make up the matrix of cartilage and the lubricating sinovial fluid in the joint. Glucosamine-containing compounds are also found in the tendons and the ligaments of the joint. Glucosamine is made from glucose and the amino acid glutamine found naturally in the body, but its production slows with aging, when people need it the most. (3)
“Our joint functions certainly can diminish with age, but too many of us assume that joint discomfort or pain is a normal part of the aging process and we just have to live with it,” said Dr. McManus. “Nothing can be further from the truth. There are a wealth of lifestyle preventative measures, from achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, to staying physically active, to eating a healthy diet, to targeting a supplementation program that can all work to keep our joints functioning well as we age.”
Most glucosamine-containing joint supplement pain products contain glucosamine sourced from the outer skeletons of shellfish, which may cause allergic reactions in those with shellfish allergies, or a possible worsening of asthma symptoms.(4) Osto Bi-Flex®, Nature Made® Triple Flex®, and Schiff® Move Free® all contain shellfish-sourced glucosamine.
Advanced Joint Health Complex is vegetarian. It contains glucosamine hydrocloride sourced from corn. Corn-sourced glucosamine.works universally but also meets the acceptability of vegetarians, those strictly following Jewish food habits, as well as those allergic to shellfish.
Numerous studies published over the years indicate glucosamine can improve joint range of motion and can enhance flexibility and improve joint function.
Dr. McManus observed, “In a review of randomized controlled trials, several trials found that glucosamine supplementation was superior or equivalent to NSAIDS. A meta analysis published in 2000 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) examined glucosamine's affect primarily on pain and symptoms in subjects with osteoarthritis of the knee. This review concluded that the compound was safe and useful in relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis.”
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2007 in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism, researchers found that daily use of 1500 mg of glucosamine was more effective than acetaminophen, which is Tylenol, in reducing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
“There's also evidence that taking glucosamine supplements for several years may promote long term joint health and may actually reduce the risk of having joint replacement surgery,” Dr. McManus added.(2)
Advanced Joint Health Complex features glucosamine hydrochloride, the most concentrated source of glucosamine, which is bioavailable and sodium free (sulfate form may contain up to 35% salt). It is every bit as well absorbed as glucosamine sulfate, yet does not use salt to stabilize the supplement as does the sulfate version. Glucosamine hydrochloride may also help the body make chondroitin sulfate (another substance necessary for healthy cartilage).(4)
Many people who need glucosamine supplements have low sodium restrictions for other health conditions, such as high blood pressure. Shaklee's New Advanced Joint Health Complex, Osto Bi-Flex®, Nature Made® Triple Flex, and Schiff® Move Free® all use glucosamine hydrochloride in their joint supplements.
Scientific evidence for the effectiveness of glucosamine joint supplements has never been overwhelming, yet doctors understandably prescribe them as these joint products are extremely safe. Typical pharmaceutical treatments for arthritis, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen, can cause dangerous side-effects. Long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs is associated with stomach and heart problems and severe liver damage with acetaminophen.. The clincher, as far as prescribers are concerned, is probably good old patient choice. That is to say, patients believe in glucosamine. They want it; it does no harm: why not give it a go? (5)
In a recent clinical study, researchers found that chondroitin sulfate interferes with glucosamine absorption. (6) Advanced Joint Health Complex is 100% chondroitin free. The leading competitive brands above all contain chondoitin and shellfish-sourced glucosamine. Nature Made® also includes artificial colors. New Advanced Joint Health Complex contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives and is gluten free. It is packaged in a recycable bottle and no bisphenol-A is used in packaging.
There is some scientific controversy regarding absorption of chondroitin and its effectiveness in a joint supplement. Chondroitin absorption is only 0% to 13% because chondroitin is 50 to 300 times larger than glucosamine. Absorption of glucosamine is 90% to 98%. Chondroitin may be too large to be delivered to cartilage cells. In addition, there may be purity and identity problems with some chondroitin products, some of which have tested as subpotent. (7)
“Several joint health products in the marketplace combine glucosamine with chondroitin sulfate, but that's not the best choice,” said Dr. McManus, referencing a 2010 study. “Research shows that chondroitin sulfate is not as effective as people think it is, largely because it is not well absorbed when given orally. It can also negatively influence the absorption of glucosamine, which in itself is typically well-absorbed.” (8)
From other pages on this site you may be aware that my husband and I both have osteoarthritis. We no longer use prescription or non prescription drugs of any kind to manage arthritis symptoms. Frankly, we've achieved surprisingly good results through natural herbal supplements alone. We're very happy because we're getting our money's worth without compromising our health from drug side effects.
We believe we've found the best joint supplement available. We don't have to worry about ingredient purity and potency or side effects--we've chosen the right company with an ironclad guarantee (if it doesn't work, get your money back!). We don't have to worry about the supplement problems that have cropped up in this industry.
Remember, under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) dietary supplement industry regulations dietary supplements do not need approval from FDA before they are marketed.(9) Manufacturers can market products without proving efficacy. They don't have to work in order to be marketed! Shaklee Corporation voluntarily operates as if it were a pharmaceutical company, where efficacy must be proved before their products can be sold. What impresses us is that Shaklee is different. .
The difference in Shaklee products is they're always safe, always work, and always green.
In keeping with that tradition, Advanced Joint Health Complex is a trusted joint supplement that's:
