Low Calorie Best Diet Shake –
A Meal Replacement Answer for Knee and Hip Pain

Losing weight with the best diet shake reduces substantial pressure on knee and hip joints. The benefits can be dramatic for overweight or obese arthritis patients or anyone with joint pain.  If people who are overweight lose 10% of their body weight—20 pounds for a 200-pound person—they can ease joint pain by half, according to the 2017 article, Weight Loss Strategies for Osteoarthritis, on WebMD.1

The recommended keto-friendly meal replacement protein powder is fortified with 23 vitamins, minerals and precise ratios of all nine amino acids.  It is non-GMO, packed with 20 grams of vegan protein and 6 grams of fiber with only 140 calories and 4 net carbs per serving. It is clinically-proven to safely and effectively lose fat and maintain lean muscle. Its botanical ingredients are screened for more than 350 contaminants, more tests by far than any other manufacturer.2,3,4

If you’re overweight, shedding pounds can ease arthritis pain now and lower your chances of serious joint damage and surgery down the road, the WebMD article quotes Amanda Sammut, MD, chief of rheumatology at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City as saying.

A loss of just 10 pounds can take 30 to 40 pounds of pressure off your knees when you walk, she commented. Fat cells create proteins that cause swelling throughout the body and can damage joints.  But losing weight lowers the levels of those proteins and can help prevent or treat osteoarthritis, Dr Sammut commented.

Study: low carb weight loss diet reduces knee osteoarthritis symptoms

How can the best diet shake reduce painful arthritis symptoms?  A low carbohydrate diet for chronic knee joint pain may be an alternative treatment from pharmaceuticals.

Osteoarthritis is the most prominent form of arthritis affecting approximately 15% (nearly 50 million) of the population in the United States. Knee osteoarthritis has become one of the leading causes of disability in older adults.  Besides knee replacement, there are no curative treatments for knee arthritis, so persistent pain is commonly treated with opioids, acetaminophen, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).5

Researchers in a 2019 study of adults aged 65-75 with knee osteoarthritis sought to test the efficacy of a dietary intervention as an alternative form of pain management because of the many unpleasant side effects of drugs.

Participants were asked to follow either a low carbohydrate diet, a low-fat diet, or continue to eat as usual over 12 weeks.  Functional pain, self-reported pain, quality of life, and depression were assessed every three weeks.  Serum from before and after the diet intervention was analyzed for oxidative stress.

The results showed the low carbohydrate diet reduced pain intensity and unpleasantness in some functional pain tasks, as well as self-reported pain compared with the low-fat diet and the control group of non-dieters.  The low carb diet also significantly reduced oxidative stress and the adipokine leptin compared with the other groups. Reduction in oxidative stress was related to reduced functional pain.

Through their evidence, the authors concluded that their low carbohydrate diet intervention could provide relief from pain and be an opioid alternative. The study was published in the Journal Pain Medicine, March 13, 2019.5

The recommended best diet shake protein powder contains just four net carbohydrates for weight loss purposes.

Twice daily diet shake clinically-proven for 24-week weight loss

A 2017 study that incorporated the best diet shake for twice-daily (breakfast and lunch) meal replacements was effective in achieving clinically meaningful weight and fat loss while not losing lean body mass.  The study was the longest (six months) and largest of its kind.  It discovered that a combination of 40 minutes twice weekly of resistance/aerobic exercise in combination with a specific structured meal replacement program was more effective than exercise alone at producing positive effects on body composition (reduction of fat mass, maintenance of lean body mass).

Subjects of programs without nutritional support and exercise typically lose 3.5 pounds of lean body mass during similar study periods.  However, participants in this study gained 3.7 pounds of lean body mass and experienced significant improvements in blood pressure and hemoglobin-A1c during the study period.  This preferred weight loss manifests in lost inches more significantly than lost pounds.

The study was published in the Journal of Exercise Physiology in February 2017. The best diet shake is a Life Shake from Shaklee Corporation, the foundation of Shaklee’s 180 Turnaround acclaimed weight loss program. Participants chose from plant protein, soy protein or whey protein options in different flavors.  The study utilized Shaklee products for the nutritional part of the research.2

Once daily best diet shake proven to maintain weight loss for additional 24 weeks

A related follow up study in 2018 invited participants of a successful six-month weight loss program to continue in a six-month weight maintenance trial.  Previous research indicates that weight loss programs are effective for reducing body weight temporarily, but weight maintenance studies have been almost uniformly unsuccessful in preventing weight regain.

The parameters were the same—a structured plan including high protein shake meal replacement and 40 minutes exercise twice a week.  The exception was the best diet shake was a meal replacement taken once a day, not twice.

After six months on the weight maintenance program, participants experienced improvement in percent fat, fat mass, lean mass, waist girth, and hip girth, with no significant change in body weight.  A subgroup of subjects who continued the weight maintenance program for an additional three months experienced additional improvement in the body measurements with no change in weight.

The findings indicated that a weight maintenance program incorporating two 40-minute weekly resistance and aerobic exercise coupled with one daily meal replacement protein shake was effective for avoiding weight regain after weight loss.

The study was published in the Journal of Exercise Physiology in July 2018. The best diet shake is a Life Shake from Shaklee Corporation. Participants chose from plant protein, soy protein or whey protein options in different flavors.  The study utilized Shaklee products for the nutritional part of the research.6

The best diet shake is a whole food protein powder meal replacement

The best diet shake is a complete meal replacement. It has the nutritional value of a meal but with lower total calories.  It’s packed with 20 grams of plant protein or soy protein and scientifically designed to help build lean muscle, burn fat, improve metabolism and reduce cravings.  Plant proteins are cholesterol free, an added health benefit.

The plant protein option contains a proprietary blend of pea protein, L-leucine, organic chia seed protein and organic pumpkin seed protein.  The soy protein option substitutes non-GMO soy protein concentrate and isolate, but otherwise comprises the same proprietary blend of organic chia and pumpkin proteins.

For weight loss purposes, a meal replacement shake substitutes a full meal in a daily diet.  When replacing whole food meals with one or two daily shakes it is of utmost importance that the protein mix be fortified with vitamins, minerals, all nine essential amino acids, omega 3 ALA (an essential fatty acid) and calcium. The amino acid L-leucine is particularly important as it maintains muscle mass during weight loss which decreases the chance of regaining weight.

Meal replacement protein powders are customizable, convenient (under 5 minutes to prepare) and portable. The powder is blended or stirred into 10 oz of water or milk. Nutritional values can be increased by adding fruits, vegetables or nut butters.  However, doing so requires caution if it interferes with calorie and fat intake goals.

Meal replacement shakes should not be confused with ready-to-drink protein shakes which are intended to increase protein intake but are not complete meal replacements. To put it simply, meal replacements help with weight control, while protein drinks are used for athletic performance and muscle gain.

Top selling protein powders contaminated with heavy metals

For those considering losing weight for pain relief from arthritis symptoms of knees and hips, not all meal replacement protein powders are equal.  It is important to choose carefully.

Protein powders are often contaminated with heavy metals and could pose a health risk, according to investigative tests performed in 2018 and 2010.7

Consumer Reports analyzed the levels of contamination in the top-selling protein powders and found 100% contained detectable levels of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, and bisphenol-A (BPA), according to the report, Arsenic, Lead Found in Popular Protein Supplements by Jesse Hirsch on March 12, 2018.8

Virtually all the 134 products tested from 52 brands contained at least one heavy metal and 55 percent tested positive for BPA.  These substances have been linked to cancer, brain damage, and reproductive issues.  The products were screened for over 130 toxins and were tested and reviewed by a third-party analytical chemistry laboratory.

“These toxins accumulate in your body and can stay there for years,” says Tunde Akinleye, a test program leader in Consumer Reports Food Safety Division. “Frequent consumption of foods that contain them can have adverse health effects over the long run,” she said in the article.8

This is not the first research that has shown high contaminant levels in such products.  A 2010 Consumer Reports study detected arsenic, cadmium, lead and/or mercury in samples of all the 15 powders tested.7

A lack of consistent, organized raw material testing by U.S. manufacturers, weak industry regulations, and cheap foreign ingredients have all contributed to these findings.

How to find a contaminant-free best diet shake

Here are some tips when trying to find the best diet shake.  Look for a protein that is in powder form (not ready-to-drink), tested for purity and quality, with no artificial ingredients, additives or other surprises says Steve Hertzler, Ph.D., Abbott Nutrition senior research scientist and dietitian in a Livestrong article.9

How can consumers know it’s tested for purity and quality?  Look for a product that is checked for banned substances and has label claims verified via a National Science Foundation (NSF) or U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) type certification, or other label claims specifically related to purity.

Don’t grab the protein powder that simply provides the most grams of protein for your buck, as quality of protein powders varies greatly, Hertzler advises. Start with the ingredients first; if it’s a long laundry list that includes fillers, binders and additives like artificial sweeteners, you can find better.

Higher quality protein powders deliver all the nutrients you need and help your muscles to recover from exercise or simply help you boost your daily protein intake, while others lack quality, taste and purity.

The recommended best diet shake contains the following label declarations on purity:4

  • “Beyond Organic is our philosophy that Shaklee quality stands go beyond how and where an ingredient is grown.  We look to confirm the purity and potency of ingredients AFTER harvest to guarantee that the final finished product is free of hundreds of chemical contaminants.”
  • “No artificial flavors, sweeteners or preservatives”
  • Screened for over 350 contaminants, pesticides and impurities on every new botanical, 3 times more than USP standards.
