The 2006 Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), a 6-month study of 1583 knee arthritis patients sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), surprisingly showed 79.2% experienced pain relief compared to 69.4% from the prescription drug celecoxib (Celebrex) for patients experiencing moderate-to-extreme pain and symptoms of swelling, inflexibility or stiffness.

During the GAIT study, participants reported zero negative side effects from the use of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements, which also helped prevent cartilage damage.

Roland Moskowitz, MD, professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, said having the study participants take their dosage once a day instead of spreading it over three times a day, would have given a higher glucosamine peak effect, increasing the odds of significant relief.

Biotin and folate should be at least 100% of the Daily Value, the remaining B's higher, but none higher than 1350% DV. Another way to take B-vitamins in natural supplements is to choose a balanced whole food multivitamin. Stay away from high-dosage, single nutrient B supplements that may pose nerve damage risks. B-vitamins taken within the formulation of a multivitamin with vitamin K for ages 50 and over (also available without vitamin K) should be well balanced. When choosing B-vitamin supplements, do so in a multivitamin that provides 100% of the RDA of 2 mg for B6 and 400 mcg (0.4mg) for folate. Look also for Vitamin B12 at 6 mcg (100%) which works in tandem with folate.
