No Natural Cure for Arthritis nor Drug Curefor 46 Million Americans

No natural cure for arthritis? No drug cure for arthritis, either? This may surprise you if you were expecting to find a pharmaceutical or arthritis natural cure. In spite of what you read in advertising copy, no one can promise an arthritis cure, not even doctors, the Arthritis Foundation or the U.S. government.

Any supplement that claims a natural cure for arthritis has no recognized proven scientific basis for saying so. Conquering arthritis is not yet possible.

Instead, doctors attempt to relieve symptoms and halt or slow the progression of the disease by prescribing over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Persistent pain is the most prominent symptom of arthritis and is a warning that should not be ignored. Many patients in chronic pain successfully switch to natural arthritis pain relief alternatives due to lower side effect risk, rather than face a lifetime on riskier medication.

Arthritis statistics reveal more than 46 million U.S. adults have been doctor-diagnosed with arthritis, inflammatory arthritis or other rheumatic conditions without the possibility of an arthritis cure.

“Remission” is not a natural cure for arthritis

Sometimes, a remission is mistaken for a cure. Remissions only occur in inflammatory types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis but are not possible in the most common type, osteoarthritis.

If a drug or natural cure for arthritis existed, a patient would have no lingering symptoms and have no need for continuing treatment.

A remission is defined as the absence of clinical symptoms and the American College of Rheumatology classifies remission as morning stiffness that lasts 15 minutes or less; no fatigue, joint pain, joint tenderness or pain on motion, or soft tissue swelling in joints or tendon sheaths; and a sedrate (rate of inflammation) less than 30 in females and 20 in males.

Even when in remission, 95% of patients need to continue on their treatment regimen to remain in remission.

There is no drug cure or natural cure for arthritis, according to the CDC

In spite of aggressive advertising for some natural arthritis treatments and books with “arthritis cure” in the title, there is no scientifically recognized cure for arthritis through pharmaceutical or natural means.

Understandably, arthritis patients have enormous interest in such a possibility. It’s human nature to want to skip directly from arthritis diagnosis to arthritis cure and be spared years of chronic pain, disability, and medication. Nonetheless, there’s no scientific evidence or clinical proof of arthritis cures.

According to a quote from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “It is important to keep in mind that there are many forms of arthritis, and a specific diagnosis of the type you have may help to direct the proper treatment. Although there is no cure for most types of arthritis, early diagnosis and appropriate management are important, especially for inflammatory types of arthritis.” For example, early use of disease modifying drugs, and especially biologic drugs, can affect the course of rheumatoid arthritis. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can make a difference in pain and joint damage.

Only arthritis caused by infection can be cured

In my research concerning drug or natural cures for arthritis, I discovered there are certain types of arthritis that can be cured by antibiotics, such as Lyme disease and bacterial arthritis. Both are caused by infection.

I found a quote by Scott J. Zashin, a rheumatologist M.D., concerning arthritis cures, in which he said: “Lyme disease and bacterial arthritis both can be cured by antibiotics. An arthritis due to a virus, such as Parvovirus, is a self-limited condition (runs its course without treatment). Gout is a type of arthritis that can be put into remission. Even if symptoms never return, this is not considered a true cure because if the patient goes off their diet or stops taking medication, the arthritis returns.”

Since there is no drug or natural cure for most types of arthritis, early diagnosis and appropriate arthritis prevention and arthritis symptoms management is important, especially for different types of inflammatory arthritis.

Increasingly, patients who have chronic pain choose natural arthritis pain management in the form of herbal and dietary supplements. People are concerned about the long-term safety of conventional drug therapies and many would prefer natural supplements, as long as they provide acceptable results.

Not all supplements for arthritis are equal. There’s a wide quality difference between manufacturers. Dietary supplements are not regulated as rigidly by the Food and Drug Administation (FDA) as are pharmaceutical drugs. For optimum results, it’s important to find the purest, most potent natural supplement.
