Menthol –- A Cool Pain Cream

Menthol is a natural ingredient in topical creams and gels known for its cooling and antibacterial properties. It’s used in arthritis cream preparations to assist their permeation through the surface of the skin.

It replaces the pain message with a cooling sensation in order to provide temporary relief from localized pain. When formulated with a liposome system used especially to deliver microscopic substances to body cells, its results are markedly better.

Since 2003, my husband and I have successfully used a liposome-delivered menthol product that’s the best we’ve ever found.

In fact, it’s our favorite of the three natural pain supplements called the Pain Trio we use every day for our arthritis joint pain relief.

What is menthol?

In nature, menthol is an organic compound obtained from peppermint oil with local anesthetic and counter-irritant qualities. The main form occurring in nature is (-) menthol, which has low toxicity.

It is readily absorbed by the skin and is contained in products used for relief of muscle aches, sprains, and similar conditions.

When applied to the skin, it stimulates the nerves for the perception of cold, while depressing those which perceive pain. The preliminary feeling of coolness is soon followed by a sensation of warmth.

It can also be made synthetically or obtained naturally from other mint oils.

There is evidence that menthol has been known in Japan for more than 2000 years, but in the West it was not isolated until 1771.

It is included in many pain cream products as a topical analgesic to relieve:

  1. Arthritis pain sites
  2. Minor aches and pains
  3. Muscle cramps
  4. Sprains
  5. Headaches
  6. Itching
  7. Sore throat
  8. Decongestant
  9. Insect bites
  10. Minor sunburn

Topical cream that works in a hurry for arthritis pain

According to the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, menthol is one of the best and most effective pain relievers for osteoarthritis patients.

Fast absorption and deep penetration of the ingredients are the two qualities that separates the best pain cream from the run-of-the mill.

That’s the main difference in the product we recommend. Its active ingredients penetrate through the skin’s oily layer by a patented liposome delivery (as deep as four inches) when applied topically to the site of inflammation.

This deep delivery, combined with a proprietary blend of natural ingredients, makes it fast-acting and provides prolonged relief up to four hours. The additional blended extracts include aloe vera leaf gel and sweet almonds.

Aloe vera contains numerous vitamins and minerals, enzymes, amino acids, natural sugars and agents which may be anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial.

Sweet almond oil is used as a skin massage. It’s also a fixed oil—meaning it doesn’t evaporate and doesn’t have an odor. This soothing muscle and joint cream we’re featuring distinguishes itself in eight ways:

  1. It’s non-greasy
  2. It’s fast absorbing
  3. It’s applied where it hurts
  4. It’s deeply penetrating because of liposomal delivery
  5. It relieves pain
  6. It works in minutes
  7. It lasts for hours
  8. It improves blood circulation in the affected area

Side effects

Outside of rare allergic sensitivity, no common side effects have been found with menthol.

There are also no reported nutrient or herb interactions. People using combination products of two or more ingredients are advised to review the other ingredients for possible herb and/or nutrient interactions.

Menthol is considered an antidote for many homeopathic remedies and should be avoided by people taking them.

Who will benefit?

The following individuals will benefit from menthol-containing pain cream:

  1. People with arthritis, especially knee arthritis, hip arthritis, ankle arthritis, back arthritis and neck arthritis.
  2. People experiencing minor joint pain in their wrist, ankle, knee, elbow and hip
  3. People who occasionally experience minor back, neck, and shoulder muscle pain
  4. Athletes or people who exercise frequently
  5. People who use a rub before or after their workout or activity
  6. Children over 2 years old to soothe minor sprains, bruises, and cramps

Featured topical cream for arthritis pain

My husband had severe osteoarthritis in both knees from sports-related traumas. He underwent total knee replacements in 2015 and 2016. He plays tennis three to four times a week. His

arthritis is now limited to his right shoulder. His favorite natural product is the muscle and joint pain cream we’ve both been using for arthritis pain.

He applies the cream to his shoulder before every match. Previously, he applied the pain cream to both knees before playing tennis. I use it at night as needed for my arthritic neck. I also like to rub a little on my throat; it helps me breathe easier and sleep better.

We also both use the cream for all kinds of minor reasons (it even works for mild headaches). I always carry a tube in my purse and my husband has one in his tennis bag.

I can honestly say that we’ve never found a pain relief cream that comes close to being as good as this one. For these reasons, I confidently recommend this menthol joint and muscle pain cream.
